Why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are Needed to Elevate your Business
The IAM Leadership Alliance will explore the intentional approach to incorporate a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative for your organization. To address DEI, executives must lead an active and intentional effort to ensure the issue is pervasive and infused at all levels of their organization. Why should executives care about this? First off, it is the right thing to do. And second, DEI has a strong business case: if you have a strong staff and it’s inclusive, you will have a higher-performing team because not everyone will think the same way. Diversity has many layers to it—diversity of thought, diversity of experience, socioeconomic diversity, and diversity of education. There are so many different things that we all bring to the table. By extension, once all aspects of diversity is incorporated, executives must foster an environment that promotes equity at their organization. This means not just creating equal opportunities for people who are already in your loop. It means addressing the circumstances that prevent it. Does your organization provide a work environment that is truly equitable? Equity ensures everyone has access to the same treatment, opportunities, and advancement. Equity aims to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent the full participation of some groups. This is an important reason why so many organizations are changing their focus from diversity and inclusion (D&I) to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
